The PlayStation Vita was arguably the most powerful dedicated handheld ever made, featuring a stunning 5-inch OLED screen, dual analogue sticks, and hardware comparable to the PlayStation 3. By any technical measure, it was exceptional. Yet it failed commercially, crushed by the smartphone revolution and an inexplicable decision by Sony to use expensive proprietary memory cards — a 32 GB card cost nearly as much as the console itself at launch. Third-party publishers abandoned it quickly. However, the Vita found a second life as the definitive platform for Japanese RPGs and visual novels, with Persona 4 Golden becoming its standout title. It also became the go-to device for indie games and ports before PlayStation Now effectively replaced it. Sony discontinued the Vita in 2019, making it the company's last dedicated handheld gaming device.
Persona 4 Golden on the Vita is frequently cited as one of the greatest JRPGs ever made — when it was released on PC in 2020, it sold 500,000 copies in its first week, confirming the game's enduring appeal
Sony's proprietary PS Vita memory card was widely criticised as a 'tax on gamers' — a 32 GB card cost AU$80–$100, nearly a quarter of the console's purchase price, compared to near-free standard microSD cards
The PS Vita was the last dedicated gaming handheld Sony ever released — after its discontinuation in 2019, Sony confirmed it had no plans to release a successor, ceding the handheld market to Nintendo entirely
